Introduction to Submerged Pumps
Jun 09, 2026| A submerged pump is a vertical pump in which the flow-path components-such as the impeller and pump casing-are immersed in the medium being transported, with the pump connected to the motor via a shaft. These pumps are manufactured with varying immersion depths to suit specific vessel requirements. The materials for components in contact with the medium are selected based on the medium's properties and may be metallic or non-metallic.
Submerged pumps have a wide range of applications, and the diversity of classification criteria results in a wide variety of pump types. Based on explosion-proof ratings, they can be broadly categorized into two types: traditional submerged pumps (explosion-proof to Zone 1 outside the tank, but not Zone 0 inside) and new-generation submerged pumps (explosion-proof to Zone 1 outside and Zone 0 inside). Traditional submerged pumps are suitable for transporting various corrosive media-such as strong acids, alkalis, salts, and strong oxidizers at any concentration-but are not suitable for flammable or explosive materials. New-generation submerged pumps are suitable for flammable and explosive materials but are not recommended for highly corrosive media containing solid particles; they are widely used in facilities handling flammable or explosive materials, such as oil refineries, tank farms, chemical plants, pharmaceutical factories, industrial production lines, and power generation units.
