Working Principle of Positive Displacement Pumps

Jun 20, 2026|

Positive displacement pumps operate by utilizing the reciprocating or rotary motion of working elements within the pump cylinder to alternately expand and contract the working volume, thereby achieving the intake and discharge of liquid.

Based on the motion of the working elements, positive displacement pumps are primarily categorized into reciprocating pumps and rotary pumps. Pumps in which the working elements move reciprocally are termed reciprocating pumps, while those involving rotary motion are known as rotary pumps. In reciprocating pumps, the intake and discharge processes alternate within the same cylinder and are regulated by intake and discharge valves; conversely, rotary pumps utilize the rotation of elements-such as gears, screws, lobed rotors, or vanes-to force the liquid from the intake side to the discharge side.
